After Securing Flood Insurance Create a Home Inventory

June 1, 2013 By

Hurricane Season is here. You’ve checked your insurance policy and ensured that you have flood insurance. Now what? As a Texas insurance agency we recommend that the next step in protecting your home assets should include creating a home inventory.

The purpose of the home inventory is to minimize any losses that could occur during any home emergency by which property is damaged and certainly a hurricane is a frequent culprit.

What should a home inventory include?

  • Major appliances
  • Entertainment or electronic equipment
  • Valuable home furnishings
  • Jewelry (appraised)
  • Artwork (appraised)
  • Instruments
  • Sports equipment
  • Valuable tools and lawn equipment

Record the brand name, serial number and purchase price for each item. If you have the receipts, make sure the originals and copies are kept in safe places. Remember, it’s always a great idea to keep digital copies of these receipts. If you are unsure of the value on any items, proactively have them appraised and place the paperwork in a safe place.

One of the best things you can do is to take photographs of these items and keep copies digitally of all paperwork in a place that you can access remotely.

By taking the time create a home inventory, you could prevent added heartbreak after the damage or loss of property and contents. As a Texan, you have enough to worry about during hurricane season so make sure that you have the proper insurance coverage and then consider the recommendations of our Texas insurance agency.
