The newest addition to Katy Independent School District is set to open in Fall 2013. As soon as construction on 4400 Falcon Landing Boulevard began, everyone immediately began postulating guesses as to the name of “High School No. 7”. Today the Katy ISD School Naming Committee released their recommendation. O.D. Tompkins High School will officially join the KISD ranks following a public forum on January 17, 2013 at 6:00 PM.
Many in the Katy community are more than familiar with the school’s namesake. Obra D. “O.D” Tompkins, Jr., beloved Katy ISD administrator and community leader, could not be a more perfect name to grace the new school.
A Hempstead native and graduate of Prairie View A&M, Tompkins began his teaching and coaching career in Beaumont and after a few years moved his family and career to Katy, Texas in 1977.
He made the transition to school administration, as assistant principal and then principal at West Memorial and McDonald Junior High Schools respectively. Principal Tompkins then took the helm of Mayde Creek High School in 1999. He closed his career in the public school system as the Executive Director for Campus Administrative Support after 35 years of service to Katy ISD.
Certainly, O.D. Tompkins career is impressive, but what you will hear the most about this remarkable man is regarding his character. Those that know him personally, talk of their great respect for his integrity and servant’s heart. He has been a mentor to students, teachers and administrators alike.
It is only fitting that our newest campus be named after such an incredible man of honor. Future students that will take on the title ‘Graduates of O.D. Tompkins High School’ will certainly have quite a legacy to carry forth.
Thank you, Mr. O.D. Tompkins, for your service to our community.
