When your Dog Bites Someone

October 3, 2012 By

Your dog is a part of your family.  And like any other member of your family, you would defend him if he were to get in trouble in any way.  Sometimes, even the nicest sweetest dogs can have a bad day and bite someone if they feel threatened.  It’s sad, but true.  When that happens, how will you handle it?

Let’s figure out the situation.  If your dog were to bite someone, why did it happen?  Was your dog provoked?  Did the person throw something at him?  Did he just run up to the person and bite him for no reason?  These things are important.  What’s more important is if your insurance will cover such an incident.  Before it all happens, you should call your insurance agent to see if your current policy will cover the claim if your dog bites someone.

In most cases, your homeowners insurance will cover it as long as there was a legitimate reason for your dog to have bitten someone.  However, some policies carry stipulations that are worth reading.  Some companies restrict their coverage to certain breeds of dogs that do not fall in the category of being aggressive.  Some companies require you to have additional liability insurance if you own a dog that is on the aggressive list.  It’s up to you to find out where your dog fits in the scenario.

If you haven’t mentioned your dog to the insurance company, it is worthwhile to do it right now.  Waiting until an attack happens to find out you have no coverage could be devastating to you, your dog and unfortunately your wallet.  You will want to have coverage for any problems that could arise with your dog so that you can keep him safe from harm.  Contact your agent today to find out more.
