12 Must Have Items for Your Hurricane Kit

June 12, 2012 By

As a Texas insurance agency we talk a lot about flood insurance and home insurance. No surprise there, right? But we also want to make sure our clients and those in our community will be prepared for hurricane season as a family as well. We spoke to you last week about the most important documents you should have on hand before hurricane season. Today it’s all about what’s in your hurricane kit.

1. First aid kit

Well that one’s a no brainer, right? You can make your own packed out with Band-aids, bandages, anti-septic spray, etc. Or you can buy one that’s ready to go like we did! Include insect repellant in your first aid kit. We live along the Texas Gulf Coast, remember? Now, that should be a no brainer!

2. Flash lights

3. Water

Keep at least a 3-day supply of water per person estimating that one person will use 1 gallon of water per day.

4. Non-perishable food

Again, you want to keep a 3-day supply. Look for foods with low salt content; foods that won’t make you thirsty. Suggestions might include peanut butter, granola bars, low salt crackers, nuts, trail mix, canned meats and vegetables. If have kiddos, include a few comfort foods as of course, it can be a pretty stressful time.

5. Manual can opener

We are so used to our electric appliances that when the power goes out we find ourselves at a loss and completely unprepared. Who hasn’t done this before? So frustrating! Don’t forget the manual can opener!

6. Candles

7. Wet wipes

No power in the Texas humidity will make you very grateful you have these.

8. Check book and cash

9. Extra batteries

10. Water-proof matches

11. Spare keys

12. Battery-operated radio

As mentioned in the previous post, you’ll also want to include copies of your important documents such as flood insurance paperwork, copies of identification records, etc. If you have additional hurricane tips to share, please let us know! We would love to hear from you!
